Prevent Back Surgery with Chiropractic

Portland Back Pain Treatment without SurgeryEvery year, over 500,000 people have back surgery in the US. Although in some cases it's necessary to have surgery for back pain, the reality is that if you can prevent this type of invasive procedure, you're often better off.

Dr. Helton is here to make sure that patients in Portland have a natural, non-surgical option for back pain. We've helped many people heal from back pain without the need for surgery.

There are plenty of reasons to avoid unnecessary medical treatments: Surgeries often result in a longer recovery time and additional complications, neither of which is a desirable scenario. Luckily, as one study has found, chiropractic may actually keep you out of the operating room completely.

In this report, 1,885 workers with back injuries were examined over a three year period. When the workers first sought treatment with a surgeon, over 42 percent wound up having back surgery. For subjects who saw only a chiropractor, only 1.5 percent had surgery!

These findings indicate that chiropractic care can help you heal from back pain without surgical treatments.

If you live in the Portland area, Dr. Helton can probably help you with your back pain. Give our office a call today at (503) 771-1974 for more information or an appointment.

Chiropractic Helps People Avoid Back Surgery

Portland chiropractic back pain treatmentIn our Portland practice, we see plenty of patients who are troubled with back pain, and a few of these people have been told they might need surgery to recover. Fortunately, Chiropractic Healing Hands For You has helped many people get pain relief without the need for any type of surgical treatment. The science agrees with the results we see in our practice. One study published in the journal Spine found that consulting with a chiropractor as your first step in dealing with your back pain may actually keep you off of the operating table.

In this research study, medical researchers from Dartmouth analyzed data from about 1,900 workers from the state of Washington who first saw either a surgeon or a chiropractor for their low back issues. They then used three years' worth of follow-up medical information to find out whether the individuals wound up having back surgery in an effort to treat the issue.

What the authors discovered was that about 43% of the people who first consulted with a surgeon for their back issues ended up in surgery in that 3-year time span, whereas only 1.5 percent of those who first saw a chiropractor had the same fate. The authors wrote:

"Even after controlling for injury severity and other measures, workers with an initial visit for the injury to a surgeon had almost nine times the odds of receiving lumbar spine surgery compared to those seeing primary care providers, whereas workers whose first visit was to a chiropractor had significantly lower odds of surgery."

These are impressive outcomes. Consulting with a chiropractor drastically decreases your odds of having back surgery, plus the chiropractic patients in this report "had lower odds of chronic work disability" and they also had fewer expensive MRI tests.

Let's also keep in mind this important point: this study was carried out by orthopedic surgeons from Dartmouth College, and printed in the world's most influential medical publication on spinal injury.

The Problems with Surgery

Any surgical procedure has risks, but a serious problem associated with spine surgery is that there's a very high rate of failure. In an important analysis in the European Spine Journal, researchers wrote:

"Failed back surgery is a problem that has become sufficiently widespread to even warrant its own special conferences, with recent reviews reporting failure rates ranging from 5 to 50%."

The authors of this same study concluded:

"It is extremely difficult to identify unequivocal predictor factors that can be used to accurately predict the outcome of surgery."

As a chiropractor, Chiropractic Healing Hands For You is convinced that surgery should be the absolute last choice for treating back pain. Chiropractic works to restore your spine to its normal function--without the need of high-risk surgery or drugs--and many research studies have established the usefulness of chiropractic for back pain.

Chiropractic: The Natural Approach to Back Pain

Portland chiropractic back pain treatmentChiropractic is centered on the concept of helping your body to heal naturally through spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes that encourage overall health. For Chiropractic Healing Hands For You, this means working to reestablish your body's natural functioning to avoid the need for medications or surgical treatments. We see that many of our Portland patients are pleased to find a natural approach for their health problems.

One advantage of chiropractic is that it helps people reduce or eliminate the use of drugs. Medications are frequently supplied to patients who have back problems. This is such a serious concern that the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) issued a report stating that opioid (painkiller) dangers overshadow the benefits when administered for back pain.

Some of the most well-known narcotics, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, include hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), morphine, and codeine. Figures supplied by the AAN cite the fact that about 50% of the patients taking these types of substances for a period of three months are still on them five years later. This can further complicate the difficulty of back pain and healing, particularly if an narcotic dependency arises.

Compare that to chiropractic care which features natural healing and the benefits are clear. While a pill might be helpful at temporarily relieving the discomfort of a health issue, it's not a long-term solution to the problem. Drugs can't fix your injured spine; it will only mask the pain.

Chiropractic Healing Hands For You will first examine you to get to the origin of your back pain and then work with you to eliminate the spinal interference -- without the need for risky medications.

If you're ready for relief of your pain, naturally, give our Portland office a call at (503) 771-1974 to make an appointment with Chiropractic Healing Hands For You.

Chiropractic Before Surgery, Says AMA

Although some people are still hesitant about chiropractic, even the American Medical Association (AMA) suggests that adjustments should be tried prior to surgical treatment--the one option that should be a last resort.

Chiropractic Healing Hands For You has seen many back pain patients in our Portland office who have been hurting for years and who are afraid that they might need an operation for their back pain. Chiropractic Healing Hands For You has had great success in helping patients recover and avoid risky surgery, and the science backs up our experience.

For example, in one study carried out on almost 2,000 Washington State workers who suffered from a back injury while at work, more than 40% who saw a surgeon first following their injury found themselves having back surgery within three years. That compares to just 1.5% of the patients who first sought treatment with chiropractic care, proving that this natural approach is very effective at keeping you out of the operating room.

There are alternatives to risky medical procedures. Chiropractic is a proven effective and safe way to improve the function of your spine, which is the root cause of back pain. Chiropractic Healing Hands For You has helped many patients in Portland recover. Give our office a call today at (503) 771-1974 for an appointment.

Portland Back Pain Treatment

Portland back pain treatment by Chiropractic Healing Hands For YouMost of us suffer from back problems at some point in our lives. Experts estimate that nearly 1 out of 3 adults deal with some kind of regular spinal pain. Chiropractic Healing Hands For You and our talented staff see many back and neck pain cases in our Portland office, and we've found that chiropractic care is a highly effective way to not only help you heal from back pain, it's also an excellent way to prevent future episodes.

A recent article from the University of Utah verifies what our Portland patients have experienced: your Portland chiropractor is the best first option for an episode of back pain.

In this study, 747 patients were treated for low back pain. Each patient was assessed based on the first person they sought treatment with, whether it was a primary care physician, a chiropractor, a physiatrist (also known as a rehabilitation physician), or a physical therapist.

What the authors discovered is that the individuals who first saw a chiropractor had fewer advanced imaging tests and fewer surgical procedures.

Other papers have found the same results. A 2012 study found that chiropractic patients had the best functional recovery and pain relief for chronic back pain.

Chiropractic works by restoring the natural, pain-free function of your spine. Chiropractic Healing Hands For You and our team help your body heal with gentle chiropractic adjustments that don't use drugs or risky surgical procedures.

Lumbar Pain and the Sacroiliac Joint

We help a large number of men and women with back pain in our Portland office, and Chiropractic Healing Hands For You has noticed that quite a few cases of back pain originate in the sacroiliac (SI) joint. Investigation has revealed that around twenty-five percent of all back pain originates in the SI joint, and now new research ratifies what we have observed in our office: chiropractic is an effective method for treating this issue.

In the study released in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, 32 women who suffered from sacroiliac joint dysfunction were separated into two groups and asked to participate in one of two treatment therapies. one group received a chiropractic adjustment isolated to the sacroiliac joint, and the second group had an adjustment to the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine.

Specialists observed significantly more improvements in both pain and movement immediately following treatment, two days later, and 30 days later for the patients who underwent high-velocity low-amplitude manipulation to both the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine. This demonstrates that chiropractic therapy administered in these two areas offers both short term and long term benefits for sacroiliac joint pain sufferers—even after just one treatment session.

So, if you are having trouble with sacroiliac joint pain, or have back and leg pain and are ready to know whether your sacroiliac joint is the root, a consultation at our Portland office may be the first—and best—step towards recovery. Give our office a call today at (503) 771-1974.

Don't Choose Drugs for Back Pain

Chiropractic Better Than Drugs for Back Pain

In our Portland office, Chiropractic Healing Hands For You has helped countless patients recover from back problems. If you suffer from back pain, you've most likely been tempted to take some medications to relieve the pain. You should understand that research shows that chiropractic care is often a much healthier approach than drugs when it comes to alleviating this specific type of pain.

In a 2013 report published in the journal Spine researchers included 101 subjects who had suffered back pain for at least two days. Each person was then assigned to one of three groups. The first group, which consisted of 37 patients, received chiropractic care and a placebo of the drug diclofenac. The second group of 38 patients received fake chiropractic adjustments and the real drug. The third group of 25 people served as the control as those subjects engaged in sham chiropractic and also received the placebo, thus having no real treatment whatsoever.

Both of the groups that received some form of actual treatment, whether through chiropractic care or the medication, fared better than the control patients who had no real care. However, when the two active groups were compared to one another, the subjects who received chiropractic adjustments had results that were "significantly better" than those who took the medications.

Natural Healing with Chiropractic Adjustments

Because chiropractic care is non-invasive and doesn't use drugs, it helps enhance healing without adverse effects. For instance, NSAIDs can result in ulcers, hypertension, and other serious health concerns. Plus, the health benefits of chiropractic care last longer as it's intended to correct the source of the problem, not just treat the symptoms.

If you're ready to get help for your back pain naturally, then chiropractic is for you. Schedule an appointment in our Portland office with Chiropractic Healing Hands For You today at (503) 771-1974. We'll help improve your back pain in a healthy way!

Chiropractic and Medical Care: An Effective Combination

Portland back pain treatmentWe see many patients with back pain in our Portland office, and Chiropractic Healing Hands For You has been able to help a lot of them find relief with chiropractic. At the same time, dealing with back pain doesn't necessarily mean having to make a choice between chiropractic care and medical therapy, as many individuals utilize both types of care with great results.

Research Confirms Chiropractic and Medical Care Work Well with One Another

In a report published by the medical journal Spine researchers1 looked at a group of active-duty military personnel between the ages of 18 and 35 who were suffering from both acute soreness and limited function due to back-related issues. Some of the test subjects engaged in treatment via standard medical care, while the remainder were given chiropractic adjustments together with standard medical care, as the authors wanted to determine which patients fared better.

The authors observed that the group that received standard medical care in combination with chiropractic care scored "significantly better" than the patients who received medical care alone; 73% reported positive benefits compared to just 17 percent of the medical treatment only group who reported the same amount of improvement. This was true regarding both pain and level of function at the two- and four-week marks.

Thus, incorporating these two forms of care can greatly benefit you--the patient--offering benefits when compared to medical care alone. However, while chiropractic and medicine can work alongside each other, chiropractic offers some distinct advantages over medical therapy.

Where Chiropractic Wins

Although it may seem as if each approach plays a 50/50 role, there is one significant advantage that chiropractic has over medical care and that is in patient satisfaction. In fact, one bit of research conducted at UCLA2 that was printed in the American Journal of Public Health found that, on average, chiropractic patients are generally more satisfied with their recovery than those undergoing medical care.

According to the researchers, the main factors that patients favored over medical care were "self-care advice and explanation of treatment." This isn't surprising, as chiropractors typically spend much more time advising their patients as to how they can improve their health on their own, as well as explaining more carefully what to expect from chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Offers a Holistic Approach

Certainly, the strategies associated with chiropractic are quite different than those provided with medical therapy, but a large amount of the difference is the fact that chiropractic is a holistic approach to health and wellness. Rather than focusing on simply relieving the symptoms, chiropractic care means searching for the root cause of your pain, which often translates to greater improvement as you are addressing the problem at its source.

In addition, while medication is sometimes helpful for treating certain conditions, many health issues respond well to natural forms of treatment like chiropractic care. This means fewer negative responses to medications and lasting recovery.

You don't have to suffer from back pain or other health issues. Give our Portland office a call today at (503) 771-1974. We'll work to help you get and remain free from back pain.
